A small breathing tube had been taped to her nose and the baby's fingers were wrapped around it tight, as if she were trying to pull it out in vain. Tom badly wished he could take her out and cradle her in her arms, but instead he put a hand through one of the circular openings on the side of the box and began to caress one of his daughter's arms with a finger.
